本品是一种对多种树脂都有很强溶解力的增塑剂，能与多种纤维素树脂、橡胶、乙烯基树脂相溶，有良好的成膜性、粘着性和防水性。邻苯二甲酸二甲酯与邻苯二甲酸二乙酯配合用于醋酸纤维素的薄膜、透明纸和模塑粉等制作中。亦是绝缘漆、清漆制作中的溶剂。少量用于硝基纤维素的制作中。亦可用作*胶的增塑剂。与其他增塑剂混用，可以克服挥发性大和低温结晶化等缺点。邻苯二甲酸二甲酯还可用作驱蚊油、聚氟乙烯涂料、过氧化甲乙酮以及滴滴涕的溶剂。玩具化学发光棒（荧光棒）制作中的溶剂。
